WATER CONSERVATION

A common concern raised by a number of residents that I speak to is water conservation. The recent heavy rains in September were a welcome site in the Sydney Metropolitan Basin, but, there was not enough to greatly improve the water levels in our dams. Unfortunately much of the rain that fell disappeared down storm water drains and ultimately out to sea.

Some time ago to combat this problem I started on a project to install rain water tanks at my home, rainwater tanks store rainwater run-off from the roof offering an alternative water supply. I can say that one of the tanks is full (10,000 liters) after the recent rains. Rain Harvesting is one way that we all can help to save water and Greywater Harvesting is another.

Water saving devices such as dual flush toilets, AAA rated showerheads and tap timers installed in the house is one step to help conserve water, another step is in the use of rainwater tanks. Rainwater Harvesting helps to take the pressure off Sydney water supplies by providing a valuable water source that allows one to maintain gardens, lawns and projects around the home, ie filling or topping up pools, spas and fish ponds.

Rainwater tanks also help to manage storm water flow, as the water that would normally overflow in the storm water system during peak flows is captured by rainwater tanks.

Residential water tanks up to 10,000 liters are exempt from requiring development consent. (capacities above this size weather one or more tanks require a DA to be lodged) However certain conditions need to be met. For a list of these conditions Click here for information on the installation of rainwater tanks.
