Water Conservation Project at the home of Councillor Steve Evans

On the 15 September we had a Rain Water Tank Workshop run by Hornsby Shire Council in our back yard with over 40 people attending. Scott Housen from Aqua Domestic Rainwater Tanks gave well received presentation

I am using two main tanks for storage, one is 10,000 liters(2,200 gals) and the other is 15,000 liters(3,300 gals), the green lines show the pipes to the tanks and the overflow from the 10,000 liter tank to the 15,000 tank ( the smaller tank is a good metre higher than the larger tank). The greeny/gray line shows the overflow from the 15,000 tank to the street gutter.

Don't forget, a DA is required for over 10,000 ltr carrying capacity whether in one or a combination of tanks, my DA was submitted in March 07 and has since been approved.

We have an electric pump on the small tank for use around the house, gardens, lawns etc, and another pump is to go on the larger tank for pumping the water through the house. PLEASE NOTE it is the responsibility of the home owner to ensure the safety and health of the family especially if you intend to use tank water for drinking purposes.

Please refer to Sydney Water for details on Tanks and Connections to the House . There are stringent guide lines as to how to connect water tanks to the house.

For those who are thinking of rain harvesting, a very useful site to visit is http://www.rainharvesting.com.au as it is full of helpful hints, also, another good location to visit is Dural Irrigation & Pumps located at 270 New Line Road Dural, I have found their showroom and service very helpfull.

For information concerning Tanks and Equipment, click on this link to Irrigation Warehouse, another tank supplier that we purchased from is Clark Tanks. We also have a slimline tank made by RainHaven water systems. It pays to shop around to find good deals but remember, cheapest is not always best, service is also important. If you use a search engine and type in water tanks then select Australia for your search, you will find a lot of information on the subject.

Dempsey Plumbing and Electrical is a company that I used for the initial installation of a filtration system and house connection, and with help from Dural Irrigation & Pumps, the system has been upgraded again.

Scott Housen from Aqua Domestic Rainwater Tanks has run rain harvesting/water tank workshops arranged through Council at our place on two occasions with a third one planned for November 2008,

One could go on with a long list of sites that are worth listing, click on the link a short cut to many sites that may help in your search for information.
